Frequently Asked Questions
What happens during a TMJ consultation?
During your first visit, Dr. Sami Sarabadani will perform a comprehensive evaluation of your jaw joints, muscles, bite, head, neck, and related structures. Your medical history, symptoms, sleep habits, headaches, jaw function, and contributing factors will be reviewed in detail to better understand the source of your discomfort and develop a personalized treatment plan.
Do I need imaging for TMJ pain?
Not every patient requires imaging, but in some cases additional imaging may be recommended to evaluate the jaw joints, airway, bite, or surrounding structures more thoroughly. Advanced imaging can help identify joint inflammation, disc problems, arthritis, airway concerns, or other contributing conditions.
Can TMJ cause headaches and neck pain?
Yes. TMJ disorders can contribute to headaches, facial pain, neck tension, ear symptoms, jaw fatigue, and muscle tightness. Many patients experience overlapping symptoms involving the jaw muscles, head, neck, and shoulders.
What should I bring to my first visit?
Please bring:
-
A list of current medications
-
Any previous imaging or sleep studies (if available)
-
Your dental appliances or nightguards
-
Medical Insurance information
-
Completed patient forms, if applicable
If you have a history of headaches, jaw pain, sleep apnea, or prior treatment, any related records may also be helpful.

Do you treat sleep apnea and snoring?
Yes. Colorado TMJ & Facial Pain evaluates patients with sleep-related breathing concerns including snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. Home sleep testing and custom oral appliance therapy may be recommended for appropriate patients.
How long is the first appointment?
Initial consultations are typically longer than a standard dental visit to allow time for a detailed discussion, comprehensive examination, and treatment planning. Appointment length may vary depending on the complexity of your condition and whether additional imaging or testing is needed.
Do you offer treatment for jaw clenching and grinding?Yes. Treatment options for clenching and grinding (bruxism) may include custom oral appliances, muscle therapy, lifestyle modifications, stress management recommendations, physical therapy, therapeutic Botox, and other conservative treatment approaches depending on your individual needs.
Do you offer payment plans or financing?
Yes. We understand that TMJ, facial pain, and sleep-related treatment can be an important investment in your health and quality of life. Financing options may be available for qualified patients to help make treatment more manageable. Our team will review fees, insurance information, and available payment options with you during your visit.
